Brenda's Impressions

Petroglyphs!!!! We picked up an excellent brochure at the Moab Visitors Center which lead us to several ancient Anasazi and Ute rock art sites around Moab. We climbed up a rocky slope to view this petroglyph along the Courthouse Wash near town. In addition, we followed the Colorado River through a dramatic red sandstone canyon with several rock art sites (and numerous rock climbers scaling the shear red bluffs in the early evening light). One of the petroglyph sites was more than 100 feet long and included evocative handprints etched in the desert patina.

After musing over the rock art, we made a quick sunset trip back into Arches National Monument and burned a roll of film trying to capture the magic of the setting sun illuminating the red sandstone monoliths. What a way to spend the Fourth of July!
