Uses of HTMLjive

HTMLjive was a JSI Link of the Moment

As I showed people HTMLjive, many did not see the immediate application of the program or how it demonstrated the power of Javascript and Java.

With a CGI script

Thousands of people create HTML documents every day. While people use different editors, the basic process is the same. Get software, run the software, save the file, find an ISP to host the document and then transport it to the server. HTML code is difficult enough, but these are significant barriers to adding information to the Web.

Using a Javascript browser, like Netscape 2.0, a writer would create their document right on the HTMLjive enhanced Web page. When the document is complete, it could be instantly available to everyone on the Web when the SUBMIT button is pressed. A demonstration of this is available at OnSports OnLine

This process is certainly easier that creating a file with an old fashion HTML editor.

Ease of use

Putting a HTML editor in a Web page simplifies the creation process.

Currently, everyone creates HTML pages using an editor. Some veterans use a simple text editor and others use HTML editors. While using the editors, nearly everyone simultaneously is running their browser.

With HTMLjive you can create your document using your browser avoiding the switching between applications and the saving and reloading of files.

Note: the current version of HTMLjive does not permit previews. With the final release of Javascript, the option will be enabled. For now, you need an appropriate CGI script on a server to preview your document.

Stand alone

Until Javascript, in order to run an application, you had to download or ftp a file onto your system, exit the browser and run the application. Now, as HTMLjive demonstrates, you simply point your browser at a page and you run the application.

A significant advantage of this type of application is that you can save the 'Web page' that is HTMLjive enhanced and even create HTML documents without an active Internet connection. In other words, now when you save a Javascript enhanced HTML page, like HTMLjive, then you save an application, not just text

All of this is not to say that this version, or even this program is the perfect solution. I am certain that in the very near future we will see more sophisticated HTML editors written in Java or Javascript or as plug-ins. These future HTML editors will not be separate applications from the browser. But for now, sophisticated features are only available in several of the commercial HTML editors.

However, HTMLjive is available now, it works and it is being incorporated into Web sites. It will be enhanced and upgraded. Thank you for giving it a try.
