Implemented Web Content Management System (HEMS) for public web site and intranet. (HEMS was developed outside NEA). Trained administrators, editors and writters.

Develop interactive and database driven websites. The applications included e-commerce for NEA's book publishing unit, reporting system for all managers (AME), intranet newsletter publishing system with email workflow, 50 state planning calendar, phone directory, classified ads and others.

Introduced and developed email publishing for NEA using Lyris List Manager. On team that created 30,000 subscriber educator tip publication. Currently we host over 300 different lists with decentralized administration sending over 1,000,000 messages per month.

Manage seven web servers on UNIX, Linux and Windows machines running iPlanet web servers, LDAP, ColdFusion and search engines. Oversee the contracts for four externally hosted machines.

Deployed intranet for 5000 staff members in 50 states. Included searchable library of documents, dynamic publishing and site index, threaded message conferencing (discussions) and Web navigation based on personal profiles.

Annually, produced seven daily issues of convention newspaper online. It was converted to HTML format, including all photographs, and also distributed by email. In addition, we included national speaker like President Clinton using Real Audio.

Designed the multilingual site for Education International, an association located in Belgium. Was NEA's technical representative for the Department of Eduction's metedata project and search engine for Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM).

Developed guidelines for use of mailing lists, for Web publishing, for auto-responder uses and for email polling. Taught Web design, content managment and other classes.

1995 - 1996

Consulted with organizations on Internet strategies, operated O'Reilly's Website and Searchlight's Spinnaker as an Internet Web servers on Windows and maintained several public sites. These sites included 'Sponsor of the Day,' 'Netplex Station' and 'OnSports OnLine.' Created Megaskills web site for Home and School Institute. Promoted concept of Public Service Banners. Developed Javascript programs including an HTML editor. Produced graphics. Wrote CGI scripts in Perl and Visual Basic. Wrote and incorporated Java applets into websites.

Also operate several email services under the MailCall brand name including internet mailing lists, auto-responders (mailbots), and other specialized email services.

1993 - 1994

Vice President, Information Services and Consultant

Recruited by CEO and owner to this privately owned, computer buying group to develop, implement, and manage a new online information service. Supported over 1,100 US and Canadian businesses producing over $4.0 billion in sales.

The online system used a national X.25 network. I developed a graphic interface for the system and programmed an Internet UUCP connection. Also, designed and sold the online advertisements to clients including some of the largest computer and software vendors.

Visual Basic, dBase and Lotus Approach applications were designed and written for accounting, service and customer support. Updated the phone system and installed new computer network. Wrote monthly column for company newsletter.

1984 - 1993

Purchased 1,000 sf retail operation with annual sales of $250,000 from The Program Store. Increased sales to $1.5 million within three years. Selected to serve on manufacturer's dealer advisory board. With bank financing built a second store growing combined sales to $3 million.

Sales and profits grew as I continued to develop our multi-platform, inventory and cash register system which tied together remote sites. Adding to the longevity of the independent operation of these stores was a keen understanding of new computer products. Closed stores when market saturated with computer superstores.

1978 - 1984
The Program Store, Inc., Washington, DC
President, CEO and Owner

Started the world's first computer software mail order company in 1978, opened the world's first computer software store in 1979, and one of the first customer support BBS (online) systems. First fiction BBS. Built the market for several of today's largest software companies including Broderbund and Sierra. Featured speaker at several Comdex, Consumer Electronic Shows and other conventions. Wrote monthly newsletter (Insiders).

Started one of the first successful software publishing companies (Acorn Software) in 1980, authored several programs and oversaw all marketing. Also wrote cash register program for the stores and managed programmers writing our inventory and purchasing systems. Started software distributor. Franchised operation in 1981. Chain grew to seven locations, four company owned. We produced a Red Herring for an IPO, but the collapse of the IPO market prevented us from going public.

Sold company to an investment firm in 1982 and continued on as president. Expanded chain to 21 locations in six cities, generating annual sales of $10 million.

Computer Cablevision, Inc., Washington, DC
Owner

Designed, built and programmed the first interactive game system for the cable television industry. Included touch-tone decoder, voice synthesizer and color graphics interface. Exhibited the product at the National Cable Television Association's convention. The project was ahead of its time.

1974 - 1978
Federal Communications Commission, Cable Television Bureau, Washington, DC
Senior Microwave Engineer

Reduced a two year backlog of applications to less than two months. Promoted to Senior Microwave Engineer. Received award for streamlining the applications process and productivity. Involved in approval of some of the first uses of satellites for cable television. FCC representative on the industry committee that produced the "cable ready television" technical standard. Published numerous technical papers.
